Its not Robin of Sherwood and isn't even in the same genre beyond being created from the same legend but, as I said in my intro post, this is my all time favourite Robin Hood based drama series. So I wanted to create a thread and see if anyone else out there also enjoyed it? Its very much in the same genre as the new Dr Who series and shows like Merlin, Primeval, Sherlock and The Musketeers in that it takes a setting and mixes good characters, a limited amount of action (by modern standards), both comedy and tragedy, colourful and generally well designed settings, modern humour, lots of series 'in-jokes' for fans and amusing references to things contemporary to the audience even if anachronistic, often blurring the lines between 'real life' and the fictional world. Basically, a lot of fun but still with character depth and development of you look for it but nothing so deep that it takes over the stories or alienates those not looking for it. My favourite characters (and cast members) were Guy played by Richard Armitage, who after that has become my favourite current actor of all, and Marian played by the lovely Lucy Griffiths who was the first person I ever went to meet after a theatre performance and thus also became my first ever tv celeb autograph away from an organised event. Guy is great because he is as much a sympathy character as Robin, more so depending on which way you look at it, and was always the character that I connected with and identified with the most in this or any other Robin Hood production; and the way his character and background developed in s3 was pure genius. Marian I loved because of her feistiness, not being the fair maiden chasing after the dashing Robin as is usual, and for her hidden identity as the Night Watchman - another heroic saviour of the oppressed who seems to be a rival to Robin until her disguise is revealed; its like reimagining Marian as Emma Peel from The Avengers!!
I have not written a specific Robin Hood fanfic yet, but did make the Doctor and Amy Pond land in the Robin Hood (2006) fictional universe in just one chapter of a story; a friend who is a professional artist, named Andrew Skilleter, illustrated a scene from the story for me:
For me, this show might not stand up to others as an adaptation of the legend; its just a fun show that uses those characters in a modern and exciting way and that's the way I like to view it and judge it. Its my favourite anyway
