an existential question I've had for years.
Not really, but it still bugs me.
For me there are only 2 takes on the Robin Hood legend: RoS ans Robin and Marian. Everything else, I pass. But the truth is, I only watched Robin and Marian when still quite young and, although it stayed with me, I really couldn't remember the details. Watched it the other day and, despite still finding it good enough, it didn't live up to my high expectations. It seemed a lot shorter, with less story, than I remembered and the Sheriff accepting single combat seemed a bit too convenient but unlikely (hmmm... most likely because de Rainault is now my default sheriff and he wouldn't! Ever!) Still loved the chemistry between Robin and Marian and that ending (although I seemed to remember Robin being in much more pain and sort of asking for it. Guess not.)
Then, the other day RH:PoT was on TV. I have to say I didn't care for it when it came out and my opinion hasn't changed, at least not for the better. It's like it took most of the things that were good about RoS and run away with them... In the wrong direction. Alan Rickman may have been a good actor but his sheriff was so over the top he wasn't threatening, just ridiculous. And then there's Kevin Koster.. Who I never understood how he got to be a star and leading man since he has as much charm as doorknob! I fell asleep halfway, which I guess says it all. Oh! And "The Celts are coming!" *facepalm*
So, ever since that film came out I've been trying to find a good translation of what I think of Kevin Koster and his acting (apologies in advance to his possible fans, but well... You have your opinion and this one is mine.): canastrão! The literal translation is big fish basket that fishmonger women carried on over their heads, not what I'm looking for. It's a man, most often said about actors, who lacks natural grace or charm, not physically graceful, heavy looking no matter his real size, wooden acting, every role ends up feeling similar. Definitely not a ham, possibly the opposite. I'm probably stuck with just calling him wooden, I suppose?
